Description

🌸 Judas Tree (Cercis siliquastrum)

Cercis siliquastrum, known as the Judas Tree, is one of the most ornamental and historically significant flowering trees in the Mediterranean region. Famous for its profuse, vivid pink blossoms that emerge directly on the branches and trunk (cauliflory), this species delivers one of the most dramatic spring displays of any small tree. Its bloom density often makes the entire plant appear coated in rose‑purple color before a single leaf appears.

The foliage emerges shortly after flowering, with broad, rounded, heart‑shaped leaves that shift from soft bronze to rich green through summer. In fall, the leaves turn warm yellow, giving the tree multi‑season appeal. Mature specimens develop a sculptural branching structure with smooth gray bark, adding winter interest and making the tree a standout specimen year‑round.

Native to southern Europe and the Middle East, Judas Tree thrives in heat, sun, rocky soils, and drought, making it far more tolerant of dry conditions than Eastern Redbud. Its Mediterranean genetics give it excellent performance in warm summers, urban heat islands, and reflective hardscapes. Though less cold‑hardy than American redbuds, it can succeed in protected northern microclimates and performs exceptionally well in Zones 6–9.
